Mayor Ruth Butterfield hosted a visit from Mayor Glenn Docherty

On Friday 1 August 2025, Mayor Ruth Butterfield hosted a visit from Mayor Glenn Docherty and senior staff from the City of Playford in South Australia, who were in Perth as part of the 2025 National Growth Alliance (NGAA) Congress.

Mayor Ruth Butterfield said: “We are delighted to welcome Mayor Docherty and the City of Playford officers to the City of Armadale. Despite being in different states, the City of Armadale and City of Playford have many things in common, which includes population size, rapid change from rural to urban living and geographical location near a major city.

“We are both tackling many of the same issues with housing, infrastructure, jobs and services, as we continue to navigate the challenges and opportunities associated with rapid growth. This visit was a chance to exchange ideas, share our success stories and build relationships with another City on a similar growth trajectory.”

City of Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said: The City of Armadale and City of Playford are two of Australia’s fastest growing outer metropolitan councils. Our connection with City of Armadale provided an important opportunity to learn from a fellow high-growth council tackling similar challenges.

We visited key infrastructure projects and strategic sites, Armadale Regional Recreation Reserve, Civic Precinct Redevelopment, and Armadale Station ‘Central Park’. It was an opportunity to learn firsthand how the City of Armadale has worked through advocacy efforts to secure funding and policy support for major community and civic developments.

It was a valuable chance to exchange ideas and take back insights that will help inform our own approach, particularly as we continue to advocate for liveability, equity, and targeted investment across the City of Playford.

As part of its commitment to the NGAA, the City of Armadale was proud to attend last week’s National Congress hosted in WA, with a delegation of Councillors and Executive Officers representing our growing City under the theme: “The Future of Growth Areas.”

The 2025 NGAA Congress explored Australia’s future economy, growth area potential, council collaboration, and designing healthy, inclusive communities.

As an active NGAA member, the City of Armadale remains dedicated to working collaboratively with other outer metropolitan growth councils to address shared challenges and drive better outcomes for our communities.

The City of Playford is in Adelaide’s outer northern suburbs, 30kms from the Adelaide CBD. It is home to more than 113,000 people.
